“Okay, but first coffee”

What is one thing most people can agree on? Almost all of us use some sort of coffee or caffeinated substance to “get through the day”.  Does that not seem odd to anyone else? That we have all become so dependent on potentially harmful substances to get through the day. Now that may sound a bit dramatic and I myself am a lover of all things coffee, but we have to know where to draw the line.

Coffee/caffeine contains antioxidants, such as flavonoids which have anti-inflammatory properties and can be very beneficial to us! It has also been shown to improve alertness and reduce fatigue while also boosting a person’s mood.  Too good to be true? In higher doses, yes! Higher doses can lead to dependency which only increases the need for more and more over time. This amount of consumption can lead to restlessness, dehydration and sleep difficulties to name a few.

This is a situation where the pros don’t outweigh the cons. We can still receive the amazing flavonoid health benefits by consuming colorful fruits and vegetables. Also, eating foods such as salmon are not only a great source of protein, but also high in omega-3, another anti-inflammatory antioxidant.

Let’s not forget the energy factor. From a health stand point it is more important to get our energy a little bit more naturally. It’s important that we are aiming to get 8 hours of sleep a night, or at least 6 at the minimum.  We should work towards drinking a gallon of water a day to keep us hydrated. Also adding foods high in b12 to our diet will provide that extra boost we are looking for during the day.

So next time your enjoying your sweet caffeinated treat, maybe have eggs to go with it? It’s all about balance my friend; we can only try our best to be our best!
